Artworks, artist dates up for grabs to restore The Substation Gallery

SINGAPORE — The Substation has a win-win proposition for you: Chip in to help spruce up its gallery and in return, you get an artwork by Lee Wen, Robert Zhao, SKL0 — and even a dinner date with Anthony Chen and Janice Koh!

SINGAPORE — The Substation has a win-win proposition for you: Chip in to help spruce up its gallery and in return, you get an artwork by Lee Wen, Robert Zhao, SKL0 — and even a dinner date with Anthony Chen and Janice Koh!

As part of the arts centre’s annual SeptFest (it turns 24 next month), it’s holding a two-fold fundraising exhibition and a crowdfunding campaign to help repair its art gallery, which is in “dire condition”.

And we thought its grunge look was intentional.

From what we understand, the gallery won’t undergo a major renovation and will retain its current fish tank window, a project by artist Lim Tzay Chuen. The repairs will be for its interiors and The Substation is targeting S$30,000.

So how does it work?

First, there’s the ongoing crowdfunding campaign. Donate anywhere between $10 to S$500 and you get something in return: SKL0 stickers, a gingerbread man inspired by Lee Wen’s Yellow Man alter ego, a SeptFest 2014 tote bag designed by MessyMsxi, potted cuttings from the old banyan tree that’s been moved elsewhere because of the ongoing SMU-related construction and…

A fancy dinner for two with some famous arts peeps! Depending on how much you chip in, you get: Cool couple sound artist Zul Mahmod and TV host Anita Kapoor at Le Bistrot du Sommelier; the one-two awesome punch of actresses Siti Khalijah and Karen Tan at True Blue; ex-Arts NMP Janice Koh and Chubby Hubby food blogger Aun Koh at Bacchanalia; and Singapore International Film Fest exec director Yuni Hadi and director Anthony Chen at The Disgruntled Chef.

Now if you’re not that hungry, there’s the second option: A fundraising art exhibition.

Over 30 artists have donated works, which will be up over two shows and available for a silent auction.

It’s a pretty good line-up. Among the donors are Lee Wen, Ming Wong, Jason Lim, Robert Zhao, Jason Wee, Michael Lee, Vertical Submarine, ZERO, Ian Woo, Donna Ong and lots more.

The shows will be on Sept 4 to 13 and Sept 18 to 27, with the silent auction taking place starting 8pm on their respective final days (registration starts at 7pm).

And if you *really* can’t wait, you can just go online and buy their works now!

And yes, we know what you’re thinking. What about The Substation Theatre’s infamously uncomfortable seats? Don’t worry, there are already plans to change the seats before March next year.
